Human Relations Commission
Members
Legal Authority: Established by Board of Supervisors Resolution No. 90-935 dated October 23, 1990. By Minute Order of February 20, 1996, amended the written verbiage regarding term and reappointment.
Membership Qualifications: The Human Relations Commission shall consist of eleven (11) members, ten (10) of which will be appointed by the Board of Supervisors with each Supervisor nominating two (2) members from each one's respective district. One (1) member shall be appointed by the Board at large.
Term: The members of the Commission shall serve a term of two (2) years. Former and current Commissioners shall not be prohibited from seeking reappointment.
Duties: The purpose of the Kern County Human Relations Commission is to study, evaluate, and recommend to the Board of Supervisors plans and programs to eliminate prejudice and discrimination as well as to promote and safeguard the equal rights of and respect for all people within Kern County in the areas of employment, education, and social and economic justice, and to serve as the Kern County Equal Opportunity Program Advisory body.
Meeting Place and Time: Third Monday of each month, at 1115 Truxtun Avenue, Third floor, Multi-Purpose Room, at 5:30 p.m.
Compensation: Commission members whose place of residence is located twenty (20) miles or more from the site of the meetings and other Commission business shall be reimbursed for travel expenses incurred in going to and returning from said meeting site from his/her place of residence at the rate per mile provided and approved by the Board of Supervisors for the reimbursement of County employees for private mileage as set forth in section 103.3.3 of the Kern County Administrative Procedures Manual.
Ethics Training: Pursuant to State law, on or after January 1, 2006, any person newly appointed shall successfully complete a course in ethics training approved by the Fair political Practices Commission and Attorney General. Each member is required to complete this training every two years.
