Sequoia Area VIII Board Developmental Disabilities Program Advisory Board
Members
Legal Authority: Established by Board of Supervisors Minute Order of May 12, 1970 pursuant to AB 225, Lanterman Mental Retardation Services Act of 1969, consisting of Merced, Mariposa, Madera, Fresno, Tulare, Kings, and Kern Counties.
Membership Qualifications: Two voting members appointed by the governing body of each county, and five voting members appointed by Governor. Governing bodies of the counties in each area shall select appointees, as feasible, from: a) persons with developmental disabilities or the parents or legal guardians of such person (50%), and b) representatives of the general public (50%)--Section 4576 Welfare & Institutions Code.
Term: Three years; in counties with more than 100,000 population no member shall serve more than two consecutive three-year terms.
Duties: Area boards shall protect and advocate the rights of all persons with developmental disabilities, conduct or cause to be conducted public information programs, encourage and assist in establishment of independent citizen advocacy organizations, review policies and practices of publicly funded agencies, and solicit advice of knowledgeable professionals, consumers and consumer representatives.
Meeting Place and Time: Meeting shall be held at least quarterly and on all at time and place designated by Chairperson.
Compensation: Members shall serve without compensation but shall be reimbursed for any actual and necessary expenses incurred in connection with performance of duties as members of the board or of committees established by the board.
Ethics Training: Pursuant to State law, on or after January 1, 2006, any person newly appointed shall successfully complete a course in ethics training approved by the Fair political Practices Commission and Attorney General. Each member is required to complete this training every two years.
