Constitution Week - September 2001
The Constitution of the United States of America is the safeguard of all our liberties and champion of our freedoms. In 1956 The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) established the Patriotic Endeavor of designating September 17 through September 23 as Constitution Week. This was done to emphasize the responsibility of Americans to protect and defend the Constitution and to defend it for posterity. To underscore the understanding that the Constitution is our great heritage and the foundation of our society, proclamations were issued, news articles were written, television and public service announcements were presented, and "Bells Across America" was implemented in as many places as possible.
"Bells Across America" was observed wherever there were bells. NSDAR members requested that every government and public building possessing bells in their communities ring out on September 17, 2000 at 1:00 PM local time. This was the exact date and time of the signing of the Constitution. In many towns the ringing of the bells was an enjoyable cooperative celebration with communities presenting special observances to mark the importance of Constitution Week.
In Bakersfield on Monday Sept. 17 a brief ceremony was conducted by Commissioner John Enriquez, Jr. of the 3rd Supervisorial District beginning about 12:45 PM at the Liberty Bell tower in front of the County Building, Chester and Truxtun Avenues. The public was invited to attend. For more details on this event call Heritage Commissioner John Enriquez at (661) 589-5674.
In Ridgecrest a similar ceremony was conducted by Linda Archibald of the Daughters of the American Revolution on Monday Sept. 17 at 12:45 PM at the bell tower located at the Maturango Museum, China Lake Blvd. and Las Flores Ave. Lou Pracchia, Commissioner from the 1st Supervisorial District and President of the Historical Society of the Upper Mojave Desert gave a brief talk about the local bell.
