LAKE ISABELLA FLAG CEREMONY PLANNED

On Friday, April 11th, a memorial flag will be raised in Lake Isabella to remember the thousands of children lost nationwide, and in the last year, to violence.

In the center, the white chalk outline of a missing child symbolizes the children lost to violence. We use this ceremony to specifically honor those children lost in our community due to abuse or neglect. In 2013, four children lost their lives due to abuse or neglect in Kern County. From 2009- 2013, 38 children died due to abuse and neglect in Kern County. The story is even more disturbing considering that there were 4,073 substantiated abuse victims in Kern County last year, or an average of 11 children each day. During that same time frame 18,329 referrals for suspected abuse were investigated.

A final flag ceremony is planned for Taft on Friday, April 25th at Kern County Fire Station #21, 303 10th Street in Taft.

“PURPLE RIBBON MONTH”

PRESS CONFERENCE & SAFETY DEMONSTRATION
TODAY – 11:00 AM
(Bakersfield, CA) – The Kern County Board of Supervisors has proclaimed August as Purple Ribbon Month in Kern County. For Eight years, The Department of Human Services, with support from First 5 Kern, the Kern County Network for Children “Kern Cares” coalition and our local public safety & community partners, have lead these efforts to proclaim “Purple Ribbon Month” in memory of Kaitlyn Marie Russell. We use this as a way to raise public awareness about “Kaitlyn’s Law”, passed in 2001, that makes it a citable offense for parents to leave children under the age of 6 unattended in a motor vehicle without the supervision of someone at least 12 years of age. The Law was named for 6 month old Kaitlyn Marie Russell, who died on August 15th, 2000, after being left behind in a hot van by a caregiver.

August is Purple Ribbon Month in memory of Kaitlyn and all the children who have lost their lives to preventable injuries in and around cars, and in order to educate and increase public awareness about all of the dangers of leaving children unattended in or around motor vehicles. Already this year, at least 24 children have died due to hyperthermia nationwide, including one tragedy in Fresno and another in El Cajon this past month. Even more children have lost their lives due to back-over and roll-over accidents, and tragically more than 70% of the time when this happens the driver is a parent or relative.

All of these important points will be illustrated in a Press Conference and Safety Demonstration taking place today at the Oaks Children’s Center at 11:00 AM, as well as car seat inspections with the CHP and Bakersfield Police Department.

Please join us and help prevent the unintentional death of a child!

NEVER ABANDON YOUR BABY – SAFELY SURRENDER INSTEAD

(Bakersfield, CA) – For most people, the birth of a child is a happy occasion celebrated with family and friends. But for some women, childbirth becomes a crisis - and the decisions made following an infant’s birth can be a matter of life or death for the child.

The Safely Surrendered Baby Law responds to the increasing number of newborn infant deaths due to abandonment in unsafe locations. First signed into law in January 2001, the Safely Surrendered Baby Law became permanent in January 2006. The law’s intent is to save the lives of newborn infants at risk of abandonment by encouraging parents or persons with lawful custody to safely surrender the infant within 72 hours of birth, with no questions asked. The law exists so that these infants will not be harmed because the mother abandons them, or fails to provide them with care, sometimes leaving them to die.

To date, 33 babies have been safely surrendered in Kern County since we began tracking those babies in 2006. Three infants have already been safely surrendered this year 2013.
