OUR STORIES...OUR WORDS...
Charlotte D.
I am a mother of six children and I am still raising three of them. I was a teen mother and by the time I was 19 and the mother of three, I started using drugs because of the pain involved with the death of one of my children.
Although I knew I wasn't living right, I had grown up using drugs with my mother, my sisters, my brother and my boyfriends and this was the way I knew how to live. Despite how sick of my life I was, I couldn't stop using drugs. CPS picked up my children.
Looking back, I know that CPS saved my life and my children's lives. My kids now have the chance to learn right from wrong. Today we go places as a family and we talk about things that are important to all of us. I hope to share the lessons I've learned with other parents who need my support.

I am a father who used drugs for 20 years. My family had many destructive behaviors, especially after my daughter was raped by a close family member, which almost tore my family apart.
When CPS became involved with my family they gave me the push I needed to become completely drug free. Through four years of intensive services I have become a good father again. Best of all, my family was taught how to deal with the destructive behaviors.
I now serve as a board member on the Kern Child Abuse Prevention Council and have dedicated myself to working with CPS as a Parent Leader to help others reach the same destination as my family has.

I am a father and a recovering addict. I used drugs for 25 years. I have been clean for more than two years.
By the time CPS became involved with my family, my life had hit bottom. I found that I had to make a decision. It was a choice between using drugs and having my children at home. I felt very helpless. Today I have my children back.
Looking back, I realized that CPS helped me to get my children back. Because CPS helped me, I want to help other families so that they can have their children returned.
