1. How do I apply for a position?
We accept online applications for most jobs. Look for the Apply Online link when you browse our Open Jobs. If you prefer, you may visit our office in Bakersfield to get an application or use the computers in our lobby. If you live outside the Bakersfield area, you may call 661-868-3480 or e-mail our office to request that application materials be sent to you.
2. How can I find out about extra-help employment?
View a list of currently-open extra-help positions. Once you have applied, your application will be held in our database for 6 months and the information will be available to all interested departments. You may also want to contact departments directly about the availability of extra-help. Remember that extra-help employment is limited to 9 months, and you must be off County payroll for 60 days before you can take another extra-help assignment
3. I know what job I want to apply for, but it's not on your list of open jobs. Can I apply anyway?
We cannot accept applications prior to the opening date. Request to be notified when the job opens.
4. What does it mean when a job shows a closing date of "continuous"?
A continuous recruitment may be closed at any time without notice. Applications are reviewed and processed as needed to fill positions within departments.
5. I saw a job announcement but I'm not sure if I qualify. Can I still apply?
Yes. Carefully read the job bulletin and try to determine how closely your education, training, and experience match the minimum qualifications and the knowledge and abilities the job requires. Be thorough in completing your application so that the Personnel Department can determine whether or not you meet the requirements.

6. I qualified for a position in the past, but now I don't qualify. How can that be?
Jobs change over time and the minimum qualifications may have changed since the last time you applied. In addition, your application is reviewed based on what you submit in your current application packet. We do not refer back to previous applications and exam files to determine present qualifications.
7. The job bulletin says an "eligible list" will be established. What is that?
An eligible list is made up of all of the applicants who passed the examination process. They are placed on the list according to their score, which determines their ranking on the list. A hiring department can consider the top three applicants for a single vacancy, with additional names made available for multiple vacancies. As applicants are added, hired or otherwise leave the list, rankings are adjusted, until the list expires or is exhausted.
8. Can I submit my resumé instead of an application?
No. Original employment application materials are required for all positions. Resumés may be included and can be helpful in our assessment of your qualifications.
9. Can I FAX my application materials?
You may FAX attachments such as your resumé, certificates, and other items requested on the Job Opportunities Bulletin; however, you may not FAX the application. The decision to accept FAXed application materials is at the discretion of the examination administrator on a case-by-case basis. The FAX number can be found on the Job Opportunities Bulletin.

10. Does Kern County offer preference to veterans?
To be considered for veteran's preference, the veteran must submit evidence of at least 90 days of consecutive service during specified time periods as well as honorable discharge. Disabled veterans (10% or more) may be entitled to additional credits if they can verify that they are currently receiving compensation for service-connected disability. Consult the Job Opportunities Bulletin for details.
11. Can volunteer and part-time work be counted as work experience?
Experience required in the minimum qualifications means full-time paid experience unless the job bulletin states otherwise. Part-time experience will be prorated accordingly.
12. I don't live in the United States. Can I apply online?
Our application tracking system cannot presently manage applications from outside the United States. Please e-mail us to request that application materials be sent to you. You must have a legal right to work in the United States to be employed by Kern County.
13. Will I be able to get a copy of the application once I've submitted it?
You should print a copy of your application for your records before you submit it, and you should also keep copies of any documents you submit to Personnel, as Personnel will not return any documents submitted to them. If needed, Personnel can make copies of your application materials, but there is a fee involved and it may take a few days to get the copies.
