Kern veterans and your families: Let us serve you! If you served honorably in the military, thank you for your service and sacrifice for this country. Thank you also to the spouses and dependents who served along with you. Regardless of your era, your branch, your post or your assignment, you are likely entitled to state and federal veteran's benefits, and your dependents may also qualify for benefits.
Mission Statement: The goal of the Kern County Veterans Service Department remains the same today as when it was first established in 1944: to assist veterans, their dependents, and survivors to obtain the benefits they have earned as a result of their honorable military service.

Honoring our Nation's Heroes - Bakersfield National Cemetery

The Bakersfield National Cemetery and the Bakersfield National Cemetery Support Committee invite the public to attend a ceremony to pay tribute to our nation's heroes, those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation, this Saturday, May 28, 2016.  The ceremony begins at 9:00 am and is expected to last approximately 45 minutes.

Cemetery Director, April Pedretti, and Bakersfield National Cemetery Support Committee president, Tom Pasek will welcome guests at this patriot event which will include presentation of the colors, National Anthem, playing of tapes, and a rifle salute.  "It is a privilege to pay tribute to our nation's heroes," Pasek said.  "We are honored to have such a supportive community, one that shows patriotism and gratitude for the brave men and women who lost their lives defending America".

The Associated Veterans of Bakersfield and the Sons of the American Revolution will provide Honor Guards.  Music will be provided by the Arvin High School Band and Eric Dyer.  Guest speaker will be Ms. Anita Hansen of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and Keynote Speaker will be U.S. Congressman Kevin McCarthy.  Other local and state elected officials will be present as well.  Immediately following the ceremony, all grave sites will have an American Flag placed on them.  Family members of those interred at the cemetery will be given priority in placing the flags.

The Bakersfield National Cemetery is located on Bear Mountain Boulevard/SR-223 approximately one half mile south of SR-58.  Office hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm and is open for visitation daily from sunrise to sunset.  The address is 30338 East Bear Mountain Blvd., Arvin, CA 93203.  The Bakersfield National Cemetery is approximately a 25 minute drive from the junction of SR-99 and SR-58.


Memorial Day - Remembering Kern's Fallen Heroes

The Kern County Veterans Service Department and the Kern Veterans Memorial Foundation will present its annual Memorial Weekend program, "Remembering Kern's Fallen Heroes" to honor Kern County Veterans, beginning with World War I, whose lives were given in service to this nation.  The ceremony will take place at 1:30 pm, Saturday, Mary 28, 2016 at the Kern Veterans Memorial at the corner of Truxtun Avenue and S Street, near the Bakersfield Amtrak station.

The public is invited to this patriotic event which will include the National Anthem, flag salute, guest speakers, wreath laying, rifle salute, and the playing of taps.  Honors will be provided by the Associated Veterans of Bakersfield Honor Guard and the Sons of the American Revolution.  Musical selections will be played by Doug Burdick, Highland High School Bagpipe Leader.  U.S. Congressman Kevin McCarthy is the keynote speaker.  Several local and state elected officials are scheduled to attend.  A large shade canopy will be provided and approximately 150 seats are available.
