WHY BURY THE PROBLEM?

It’s a fact, reducing the amount of garbage you throw away conserves natural resources and preserves the environment around us; but, did you know state law mandates that we reduce the amount of refuse we put in landfills. The California Integrated Waste Management Act requires cities and counties to reduce the amount of garbage going to landfills 50% by the year 2000, or face penalties of up to $10,000 per day!

To get information about recycling programs and facilities, call or e-mail the department (contact numbers at bottom of page or click on following link) and request a copy of the current free recycling guide.

CONSTRUCTION AND DEMOLITION MATERIAL RECYCLING

Common C&D materials include lumber, drywall, metals, masonry (brick, concrete, etc.), plastic, pipe, rocks, dirt, cardboard, or green waste related to land development. Of these, metals are the most commonly recycled material while lumber makes up the majority of debris that still goes to a landfill.

The disposal of wastes generated from construction and demolition activities represent a significant portion of operating expenses in addition to consuming valuable landfill space. Through careful planning, reuse and recycling of C&D materials can actually be more economical than disposal.

GREENWASTE RECYCLING

Yard and wood materials are the leading components of the waste stream, but are some of the easiest material to divert from disposal. The city of Bakersfield's goal is to turn garbage into something useful, while preserving nearby landfill space for our future. The City of Bakersfield's Mt. Vernon Facility, co-sponsored by Kern County, is helping divert greenwaste from the landfill and recycling it into compost and mulch. Benefits: Compost loosens the top soil when mixed in and helps plants spread their root base. The looser soil also allows water to soak in and be retained for much longer periods of time. You use less water and your plants grow faster and healthier. The composting process helps destroy plant diseases and weed seeds, reducing the need for pesticides or herbicides. Yard and wood material must be separated from any waste, litter, or animal excrement. The Mt. Vernon facility sells compost and mulch at attractive prices.
